Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVS), are one of the most common and effective ways to help control the heat around a house and minimise energy waste in rooms that are less used than the more common living spaces. These valves incorporate a sensor which senses the room temperature and adjusts the flow of hot water to your radiator according to what number the user sets it to. An example would be in a box room used for storage, if you set a TRV to a middle setting, you can allow the room to remain at a lower temperature – stopping the room from cooling completely whilst not excessively heating an unused living space. It also gives you more flexibility to control the temperature of the living spaces that are more frequently used. Typically a house with TRVS installed in every room and correctly used is reported to save around 18% on energy costs.
Turning a TRV to a higher setting will not make the room heat up any faster – that depends on the boiler size and setting, and the radiator size. All it will do is keep heating the room until it’s at the temperature designated by the TRV.
In the last couple of years SMART TRVS have also been developed by companies such as HIVE and Honeywell allowing you to control them remotely and give you the potential to save even more. 💰
